Forays into the land of Maya
A selection of projects, from stills to motion. My education in this area started after courses at Escape Studios, London in 2008. The course started with a thorough grounding in Autodesk's Maya, the film industry standard 3D software. The second half of the course comprised of a range of software, concepts and techniques, used to integrate 3D elements into film footage. We used a range of software including Maya, Shake, Boujou, and PF Track.
During the course I completed a project which involved modelling an object, texturing it, and integrating it into a piece of film footage which had to be motion tracked (also known as ''match moving'').
I have carried on learning about film (Final Cut Studio and Adobe Premiere) and the various aspects of the process (grading, sound etc).
This might look like a real world object but is in fact completely computer generated. I produced this during a six week Maya Core course at Escape Studios, London.
This image was used by NASA to illustrate a news piece about a new experiment, the Neutron-star Interior Composition Explorer/Station Explorer for X-ray Timing and Navigation Technology (NICER/SEXTANT) and can be found here
Still from the video.
This was achieved at the end of the Visual Effects 6 week course at Escape Studios. Modelled and textured in Maya, motion tracked using Boujou, composited with Shake. Footage filmed in Neals Yard, London on a Canon XH-A1. The hand-held style of shooting was necessary to demonstrate that the footage was tracked properly and the model looks 'planted' in the scene, and does not shift around.
This is a side shot as the phones cross the 'River'. Composited onto real footage.
This is a set of shots we put together as volunteers and a learning project for a green festival which was focussing on recycling mobile phones. It's missing the splash screens 'What are you saving your mobile phones for?' and 'If it isn't this cool... ' It was done in Maya, Shake, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. We've blogged exhaustively about the dynamics side of it (an intense learning experience!) over at urbancoconut.blogspot.com/2009/07/vfx-with-hindsight.html

This project was intended as part of the LoveLondon campaign 2009 which was focussing on recycling mobile phones, with its partner, Regenersis. The pattern of the Dominoes was intended to reflect the LoveLondon logo, a heart with the river Thames running through it.
