A Perfect Day for Bananafish

A Perfect Day for Bananafish

"A Perfect Day for Bananafish" is a short story by J. D. Salinger, originally published in the January 31, 1948.
The story is telling the tragedy of Seymour Glass, a soldier returning home from war to his wife and family, and unable to cope with the reality to which he returned.

On his recovery vacation, Seymour tells a story about a different and unique fish, that all he can eat are bananas. And this fish eats more and more until it actually explodes and kills himself.
This fish, of course, symbolizes the state of mind of Seymour. His head is full of terrible war experiences, until it decides to take his own life and to commit suicide with his pistol.

What guided me while designing this book is that feeling of saturation, that fills and chokes the soul of Seymour to an impossible situation. The same happens to the white space in the grid, the precious air for letters to breath is going and disappearing.
The typography and the photo treatment is inspired by the 50's and the book cover contains a manual animation of my interpretation to a bananafish.
