Logo Design Case Study | BMAC
Bowie Metropolitan Alumni Chapter (BMAC) is an alumni chapter of Bowie State University. The chapter is dedicated to creating, maintaining and enhancing relationships among Bowie State University Alumni, current and prospective students, faculty and staff in order to foster loyalty, friendships, interest and support for Bowie State University.
The Bowie Metropolitan Alumni Chapter provides institutional support through scholarships, programs and activities that enhance the overall image and direction of Bowie State University.
The Brief
My goal was to create a logo that represented sophistication, the Metropolitan and the metropolis areas that surrounds the University itself ̶ Baltimore, Annapolis, DC, Virginia. A university also has the characteristic of a metropolis; it has a sense of sophistication, a wide variety of people (students, faculty, staff), a mixture of cultures, ideas, it has architecture, tall buildings, etc.
Concept Development
One idea I thought that would best represent metropolis were tall buildings. My first two concepts didn’t go anywhere, so I left the whole process for a while, and decided to come back to it after doing some research and getting some inspiration.
I didn’t do any sketches on this project, so I went straight to the computer. My next attempt was to create a silhouette of a skyline. That was an idea, but it was far from where I finally ended up.
Getting inspiration from my research and a suitable geometrically shaped font, I was able to craft an abstract artwork that accomplishes double functions: One, the artwork form the letters "MA" in BMAC, and Two, the letters in turn form three tall buildings, and buildings are a representation of metropolis. I made an alternate version, removing the "B & C" and that seem work well too.
For the rest of the logo (text) I used the fonts, “American Captain Patrius 01” and “Balladeer Medium”. Black and Gold are the University’s colors.
