The Brief
The role of the documentary maker/photographer is to inform, to tell a story through pictures. Often the subject
of these pictures is something that the viewer has not seen before. You are asked to take an aspect of Glasgow,
an ‘unseen’ side of the city that you can make into a set of 8 documentary images or a film of no more than 4
mins duration. Your choice of subject is entirely up to you. You may focus on either, a person, a group or a
place. The old adage might dictate that the more interesting your subject the more likely you are to make
interesting work, but perhaps more importantly it is the way you use the camera and the visual language you
employ in relation to your subject that might ultimately determine the success of your project
.
This was my first shoot of a 4 week project, i happend half way through the second week. I think to much time was spent planning and not enough time was spent snapping!
Second Shoot - Train
After shoot one I decided to focus on the transport within Glasgow. First port of call was the trains, my eye was initially drawn to the people commuting. On this shoot the time was about 1400hrs, which meant the people traveling was quite sparse. This led me on to focusing on more abstract parts of the train. The closer the train got to central the more crowded it became. Again this led me on to shooting more abstract shots of materials of clothes, bags and shoes.
After spending a considerable amount of time on the transport systems one of the aspects I found rather interesting was the interaction between people in the confined spaces of the specific mode of transport.
