Liam Hannon's profile

Sanmai kitchen knife

The first of hopefully many colaborations.

This blade was forged and rough ground by my friend Joshua Burrell. From there I then cleaned up the profile in a couple of places and proceeded to polish and etch the blade.
The blade is constructed from a piece of 1084 steel held in a 'jacket' of mild steel. Although I called it sanmai it technically isn't. Sanmai (san meaning three, mai meaning layers) is a blade constructed of three seperate pieces of metal, where as this is made from two.
The bolsters are made from 416 stainless steel and held in place with matching pins. Underneath the bolsters the knife is a full tang, giving more strength, support and weight towards the front of the knife.
African Blackwood has been used for the rest of the handle, which is a hidden tang construction. It is attached with epoxy resin and a mosaic pin.
As the knife is used the patina on the blade will change quite dramatically. The 1084 steel will darken first and eventually the mild will too. However the 1084 will always be darker due to the carbon content.
Everything on the knife has been handmade and constructed.
Commissions and custom work are available. Please message me for more details.
