The main influence on this project was the intention to complete the boardwalk in Asbury Park New Jersey with a NOAA research and education center. The building was designed after the topology of structures that currently exists along the boardwalk, where the boardwalk pierces through the structure and continues. In the design scheme the building is split into four separate volumes, each volume consists of a different type of program. Each structure is oriented as if the power of the ocean has drifted the volumes around on the site and also to connect the buildings to specific views. The boardwalk responds to this movement by shifting to the west and meeting the building edges. The form of the structures is relative to the massing of the program found within the interior spaces. The large glazing on the East and West facades are covered by a wood slat rain screen that protects the glazing during storms and controls incoming light. The volumes are reconnected by a secondary boardwalk on the ground level and second level so that circulation is still continuous.
