Calling Salvador

Calling Salvador came out of a connection of some simple aspects that ran through my every day. Sometimes, when I need to be inspired for a new idea I take a little time to search through a large collection of collected drawings that I store from all my sketching sessions. On this occassion I came across a rough image of a crawfish I had done some years back, and liked a lot. This stuck in my mind for several day, and I was constantly thinking about what I could do that was similar. By chance I was doing some research on some other art matters and I came across an unrelated Salvador Dail image. Being a fan of Dali I was aware of a great deal of his works, and one instantly popped into my head, in relationship to the lobster. I am sure you are all now picturing his famous lobster telephone.

The craziness of the image came about after a discussion I had about the complaints that lobsters must feel as they are always portrayed as red (as in Dali's piece), but in fact they have a beautifully rich array of colours across their entire body; with especially wonderous tones around the eyes. So, the composition came into place that the lobster was, although in admiration of Dali's piece, in fact calling to the great artist to juxapose the image he had created.

It was important to find a phone that was comparible to the original piece, so research was done for old bakerlight phone images and the drawing was based on one of these. The lobster itself has been designed based on several species, though the colour has tried to stay true to the common lobster, that unfortunately becomes the object of red admiration of many; including the great mistro himself.

An anmated gif that shows the process by which the lobster was created. The only difficulty that was faced, was that the sheen on the top body plate was easy to get the first attempt.

below are step by step screenshots, of this process.
The sketching came quite quickly and easily. Without too much alteration in the design aspects. So this part of the design process flowed very easily. As per usual, the design was marked up to A1 and once it was printed out on a plotter, the design was pieced in on A1 Bristol paper to get the tectured render ready for scan.
