Furniture Making & Design

As part of a PLC Fetac level 5 course in furniture Making & Design I was tasked with a number of projects to design and making particular items as seen above.
Certain materials and methodologies were used in terms of manufacturing processes such as wood turning, glass etching, joinery as well as considering types of finishes.

Side table: This was the first project under taken, It was constructed form pine with a mahogany inlay on the table top. Scalloped details to the rails was used to create a more interesting visual appeal.
Miniature clock: This was created from mahogany and Oak. The aim was to create a miniature clock from two different materials.
Desk tidy: This was designed to replicate a book open on a desk. I had certain materials that where required to be used such as mahogany that I used for the base and flexi plywood which I used to create the arched leaf of a book.
Chess board and storage: This was created from mahogany and Oak. The aim was to create the chess playing board from two different materials and include an area of storage for the playing pieces
Glass etching: A project that was to introduce me to etching. Tasked with the design of a simple etching and a complementary framework.
Wood turning: Two pieces of wood turning a candle stick and bowl both constructed on a lathe from spalted beach and finished with several coats of Danish oil.
Wood turning: Another wood turned project this time a table lamp. Constructed again on a lathe from spalted beach and finished with several coats of danish oil.
Wall mounted cupboard: This was constructed from mahogany and an inlay of Box wood. I wanted to create a personal touch to the design so added three picture frames that can be easily changed without having to remove the cupboard from the wall. This piece was put on display at Carlow George Bernard Shaw Visual arts centre in 2010.
