BMO 'AdviceDirect' stirred our team's excitement, as it was not only born out of the stylized world we created for the award-winning game "Heart of the Arctic," but it was also a chance to create a totally new and unique series of stylized, simple, sweet animations.
The project called for a series of beautifully illustrated short animated stories that would bring a whimsical and friendly appeal to a more serious online statistic based service such as BMO's AdviceDirect. Together, our team worked very close with the agency to develop the scripts and look. There was a whole series of hands-on back and forth meetings at their office and our studio. After we established the scripts and look for the four pieces, we got down to business animating.
The technical challenges mainly stemmed from developing the graphic language of the piece. For example, our kraken went through dozens of iterations before we were all happy with its balance of the fantastical and the conceivable. We generated a tonne of illustrated options for many of the assets, some of which are featured here in our WIP section.
The production schedule was fairly fast and furious. With a tight turnaround (the 4 pieces had to be animated and finalized in only a few weeks by a small team), we had to quickly find a solid balance between 3D and 2D and still make them fit in the same world as smoothly as possible. We hope you enjoy!
