Pirate Cove - Interior Design Concept Sketches

These are sketches created as concepts for a new developments at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre. The theme centered around the Pirates of Conch Island branding and characters created as part of the greater branding package.
This is the top view of the entrance decking and miniature aquarium that visitors have to walk over to enter the cove. The aquarium would be covered in acrylic in places to protect the fish and comply with safety but at the same time add realistic atmosphere and creating an eye catching entrance to the space.
This grotto sits in the middle of the space and both added to the effect and helped direct the traffic flows around the space. .This grotto houses the staggered rock pool and has room on the walls for addition information. It also house themed additions such as tiki torches and pirate souvenirs.
This platform was designed to look like a shipping dock and in alternative sketches included an old fashioned pulley system and other detailing. This platform houses a clear acrylic treasure chest for visitor donations and a large message in a bottle shaped vessel with a time capsule housed inside it.
A sunken row boat bookshelf to house stationary or books. This was designed to be paired with a soft cushion treasure pile with gem shaped pillows to create a quiet activity area.
This oversized pile of treasure was intended to be made of durable fabric and filled with bean bag beans to create a large sitting area for visitors to participate in quiet activities. The gem shaped cushions were added in keeping with the theme / effect and to ensure visitors are comfortable.
A redesign of the existing touch pool tank. This new design is intended to look like actual rock pools found in a cove and is staggered at different heights and includes built in rock steps to allow visitors of all heights to safely view the creatures. The surround absorbs the extra water from the tank and there is a waterfall system that links the tank levels. The surround of the tank also includes imprints for crayon rubbings to make it multi sensory and multipurpose.
Activity tables designed to look like old wooden shipping crates. These are staggered at different levels to allow children and adults of all sizes to use the activities safely. The seats were also based on shipping crates and barrels.
A sensory wall with hidden rock holes filled with various marine themed objects that visitors had to guess by touch. There is also a covered answer sheet to reveal the contents of the wall.
The Jail House tank with fake pirate skeleton. This tank would house the "Most Wanted" fish of the month that could be profiled and changed as could the posters and branding around the tank.
The entrance to the Pirate Cove area. Including a board walk over a covered salt water aquarium, with faux rock facade and pirate themed additions.
