“Colorado without railroads is comparatively worthless.” John Evans 1867 The Central Platte Valley Development is a direct response to Denver’s influential tramway system of the late 1890s. Since the sites contain the original tramway lines that connected Denver and Golden, Colorado, the scheme mimics the sense of journey that was once a common method of sustainable transportation. The facility is split into three stations; the primary Central Platte Valley depot, the Lakewood depot and the Golden depot. Even though the use of the proposed depots varies, the consistent form of the designs is driven by the traditional rail stations of North America. The materiality of the architecture is inspired by the smoking coal trains which charcoaled the façade of the depots. The depots are calm and contemplative spaces, which enable a recollection of the region’s history. In addition to offering an experience of the past, each depot can also be used solely as a light rail station. Read Less
