Port-a-potty Project
Project Statement:  How might we better address the aesthetic and functional demands of fall football tailgating on and around the UNL campus?  In particular, how can we meet the needs without the ugly proliferation of portable restrooms in prominent locations such as the parking lot at 10th & Q streets?
All reserach indicated that the current port-a-potty condition was the most economical.  It did not make since to constantly move the port-a-potties or make permenant structures.  "Hiding" them is a way to keep the costs of renting down while keeping the potties out of sight.  It was not enough to simply put a cover around the potties so I made the porject into a campus wide landscape project that would not only allow for the "hiding" of the port-a-potties while they are on campus but also add an organic aesthetic to campus. The Serviceberry was the main plant for my landscaping project.
The plant hardiness zone map indicates that Nebraska is located in ideal conditions for the Serviceberry (Zone 5).
The Red lines indicate the Serviceberry growth paths.  There will be a simple plotting of shrub off campus acting as a path indicator that leads you to Memorial Stadium.  Once on campus, there is a transition from a simple plotting of shrubs to a system of shrubs and "pocket structures."
THe North side of the street shows the simple plotting of the shrubs.  The 12 represents parking lot 12.  The shrub system becomes a single row of shrubs to create a wall behind the "pocket structures."  The pattern is shrub-structure-shrub.

The Structures are nestled in the shrub system.  In time the shrubs will be molded around the structure to create the "pocket structure."
During the off-season, benches could be placed within the structures.
