Individual Project

An individual project is where the students are given the oppertunity to choose any subject of thier choice and use that to fit the given criteria. I wrote a brieff for the individual project that was given to me by my tutor. The criteria that must be abbided by is that the chosen subject must be used in a narritive style and advertisment. For my individual project I have decided to pick the theme of 'The Day of the Dead'. I will be taking an existing brand of tequila and redesigning the logo to one of my own designs and changing the tequila its self by adding gold flakes into it. The newly designed tequilla will then be advertised to be released as a limited edition for a week before the holliday and a week after it. The Day of the Dead is the mexican version of halloween. It is celebrated over three days, the 31st of October, the 1st of November and the 2nd of November. Alters are built on the graves and favorite food, drinks and possesions, of that particular deceased, are left there as an offering.
This is a photograph of the first sketch that was done at home in one of my sketch pads. It is a sugar skull which is what the people visiting the deceaseds' graves would place on the alters that they had built as a offering.  I have never done any thing in this style before so doing this subject has realy taken me out of my comfort zone, but I enjoy learning new techniques and different styles of drawing. It helps to widen my drawing range.
This is a photograph of the first sketch of a lady called Catrina. She was first created to comercial joke about the aristoratic people of that time. She was originally depicted to be skinny almost to the bone and dress in exagerated aristocrat clothing. She was later the used as a widly known symbol of the celebration with the only changes of her face being painted to look like a sugar skull. Both men and women would usually paint their faces like this but in accordance to thier beliefs, personality, etc. The women would accessorize with large flowers in their hair, usually as a full circle to represent a reith. This was drawn in the same sketch book as the sugar skull sketch.
This is a digitaly redrawn illustration of the first sugar skull that I drew in my sketchbook. I stuck mainly to the original colours that I had used in my sketchbook, but the changes are only slight.
This is the first step towards the creation of Catrina. I used Phtotshop to create this digital illustration. I drew out the basic outline with little detail to get a simple guid for the face and hair.
I then added the rest of the outline to the hair and added small detail to the hair curls and added 3 flower ranging in size from small large small.
Next I added some facial features, a nose, lips and the right eye. I added some minor detail to the eye and eye lashes.
After adding the other eye, I then added the eye deccoration to both eyes.
Some minor detail was added to the lips to represent the teeth on an exposed skull.
Saticfied with the already applied detail, I then drew on the rest of the face deccoration.
This is the finished digital illustration of the original physical sketch. I used Photoshop to redraw the sketch. I stuck to the most of the main colours and design, but changed the colour of some of the head decoration and cheek decoration. I used the colours Purple, White, Black, Yellow Red and Pink is because it is believed that these colour represent different meanings. here is thier meanings:

Purple, grief, pain, suffering, mourning.
Pink, celebration.
White, purity, hope.
Orange, the sun.
Red, the blood of Jesus.
Yellow, Marrigolds (death).
- Black, land of the dead.
This is the universal template that I drew out in Photoshop to use as a base outline for both sugar skulls.
I added some small deccoration around the eyes and coloured in the eye sockets. I have also added a bold curve near the tip of the nose.
I have now added some head deccoration to the center of the skull's head.
The final deccorations have now been added to around the teeth. This then completes the design for the second sugar skull. It is now ready for colour.
I have inserted some smaller and larger detail across the skull. This is the second sugar skull that I digitally produced. His name is, 'Carlos'. I did not do a before hand sketch because I had no inspiration at home to give me the required ideas. Sugar skulls are originaly based on the deceased person's personally. So, I have created this one based on mine.
To play around with the advertisement ideas, I decided to do a popart style illustration. This was to not olny let me experiment with the colours but to also see what different layer settings would effect the colours and appearance.
I done the same style and experimenting with my 'Kiss of Death' illustration.
The brand of tequila I have chosen to use is 'Casa Noble'. 'Casa Noble' was first produced in the 1700's in Hacienda where an excessive amount of Blue Agave is found to grow naturally, that the only ingredient of tequila. Tequila, when it was originaly produced, was only to be drank on special occasions i.e. a Birthday, Funeral, etc. Blue Agave is grown in the hills near the city of Tequila in the state of Jalisco. This is the place of tequila's origin. 3000 acres of Blue Agave is grown in the hills and takes 10- 14 years to grow. The process of tequila is started with steam cooking the Blue Agave for 36 hours, then pressed. The juices that flow out of the steamed Blue Agave is tequila. The tequila is then left for 5 days to ferment, then distilled 3 times. After the 'Master of Tequila Tasting' has sampled the tequila and given the go ahead, its then put into French oak barrels to be caked for 364 days. Then after final tastings by the M.T.T. and it's been given the all clear it is then bottled, packaged and sold all over the world. 'Casa Noble' have made 4 different tasting tequila;

- 'Crystal' (Clear bottle/ clear tequila)
- 'Reposado' (Light blue bottle)
- 'Anejo Tequila' (Purple bottle)
- 'Limeted Edition Tequila' (Black/ Dark blue bottle, aged for 5 years instead of 365 days)
Crystal, Respado, Anejo Tequila, Limeted Edition Tequila.
This is the lable that I have designed using my own sugar skulls and painted lady. The lable will be a clear lable as the Casa Noble bottle has all of its logo engraved into the bottle, so inorder for the customer to know what they are buying I chose the label to be made of a clear plastic.
This is the final design for the newly branded Tequila bottle. I changed the colour of tequila to a yellowish colour and added my illustrations. The new tequila will be available around about the time of the holiday, 31st of October- 2nd of November. The tequila will have a sweetned taste to resemble the taste of a sugar skull. I believe that bring a 'special occasion' tequila out with a Day of the Dead twist would boost the 'Casa Noble' sales as it appeals to the celebration with both its taste, colours and packaging design.
This is the Advertisement that I created in Photoshop. I decided to call the new tequila 'Muerte Tequila'. This is because 'muerte' in mexican translates to 'dead'. This links into the theme through what the celebration is all about. This adverisement will be used on places like internet banners, billboards, etc. The text reads: "Muerte Tequila, Limited Edition. Subject Available Between 31st of October till the 2nd of November 2014." I inserted a small logo of 'Over 18's only' to specify the this beverage has restriction by law and that the company is fully aware of this restriction and is in agreement with this restriction.
Here are some examples as to where and how this product will be advertised:
