Wakefield, United Kingdom
The proposed scheme recalls the traditional, responsible drinking culture of Wakefield’s public houses. In response to the decline of local pubs and the increase in alcohol misuse in Wakefield, the proposed institute will undertake research, re-educate and rehabilitate people who have issues with alcohol. The scheme aims to capitalise on the social interaction between responsible drinkers and alcohol abusers within the setting of a craft brewery where research into new recipes for low and non alcohol drinks can be produced. The ingredients for many of the drinks are grown in adjacent fields around the building.
The building hovers over the Hebble Navigation Canal at the brink of the Westgate/Kirkgate pub crawl of Wakefield City Centre, setting it in a prime position to demonstrate responsible drinking culture and to ignite the revival of the Merrie City.
