Third year cooperation project between Kettler and university students. Innovations for the traditional but currently out of fashion German bicycle brand were developed. Children between 8 and 14 years not only grow, they also change their flavor, often more than one time. In addition to the adjustment of saddle and handlebar, the look of the bicycle can be changed as well. Cooperation Project KETTLER - University of Wuppertal Visionlabs
Third year cooperation project between Kettler and University of Wuppertal students. Innovations for the traditional but currently out of fashion German bicycle brand were developed. The potential I choose to work
on was a bicycle for children who just learned how to ride a bicycle within usual road traffic.

Children between 8 and 14 years not only grow, they also change their flavor, often more than one time.
In addition to the height adjustment of seat and handlebars, the look of the bicycle can be changed as well. This is realized through a cover that hides the space between the top tube, seat tube and down tube, a place for changing graphics and a secret hideaway to store a lock or other things.
Process
I started off with sketching functional concepts, then went on with design concept sketches and into photoshop and CAD mockups. The final design of the frame was modeled in Alias, then it was imported into SolidWorks where the assembly with all components was built up. Finally a model and renders were made.
 
 
 
Frame Concept
The y-frame was chosen to make it easy to get on and off the bike while still having a sporty look that is attractive for both boys and girls. Its unusual and integrated look is defined by the integrated rack, the missing seat stays, organic transitions and the endless edges going around the whole frame. It is supposed to be a new, exciting concept.
 
 Main pillars of my concept:

INDIVIDUALIZATION

Exchangeable covers with individual graphics make unique bicycles.

LONGER LIFECYCLE
The Kids Bike can easily be resold or handed down to siblings because you can adjust it to
a new flavor, trend or person later.


UNIQUENESS
The frame design is more integrated and automotive than usual frames.

UNIVERSAL FRAME
A Y-frame was chosen because itis easy to get on (step through) and has a sporty look,
which makes it attractive for both girls and boys.


LIGHTWEIGHT
The aluminum frame is produced out of extruded and hydro formed tubes and aluminum
die cast parts.


FITTING ERGONOMICS
The frame form enables an upright seating position and is usable for a long time: the space
between seat and handlebars increases when their position is raised.


LOW-MAINTENANCE
Low maintenance parts like hub gears and hub dynamo are used so parents don't have to be
concerned about maintenance. The bicycle has seven gears: not too much to handle for
children who just started to use a bicycle in usual road traffic.


LESS IS MORE
The Kids bike offers girls (and boys) more choices concerning the look while the number of
different frame models is reduced which has a positive effect on production costs.

 
Many More Possibilities
The green one above is a very female version. The cover version “basket“ provides some extra space for small things. The opening is rubberized and makes carrying the bicycle easier. The version in black and red has additional LED-lights on the sides of the cover, it is rather for boys. The variant with the stars is unisex.There are more possibilities: for example the brand could put a new theme bike from a film on the market only by adjusting the graphics on the cover. Custom made bicycles would be another possibility. People could choose their combination of frame, cover, rims, tires and additional parts or even design their own cover. Handing a bicycle down to siblings would also become easier: it could be readjusted to the new owner‘s flavor.
