Kult Issue #08 - Food
Inspired by Japanese manga and cosplay culture, the illustration portrays a girl heroine dressed
in bean-styled armour defeating the evil spirit, Oni. The illustration has a pop art flavour to it.
The idea was to reflect the Japanese tradition of driving away evil spirits by throwing soya beans
at the Oni, concurrently shouting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi! (Out with the demons! In with the luck!)."
“In Japan, during the festival of Setsuben, beans are scattered in dark corners
and entrances of the home to drive out evil spirits.”
