Fondant and gumpaste projects
I've always wanted to learn how to decorate cakes.

When I was growing up my mom would bake chocolate cakes for any occasion and my siblings would lend a hand decorating them. When I was old enough I started playing around with royal icing. Soon after, my mom stopped baking for a number of reasons. And then real life happened. I worked as an art director, illustrator and graphic designer. I don't think I have ever thought of cake decorating again until 2009 when I started thinking of a career change.

I asked my friend Chef JB about fondant lessons, and he said he'll teach me the basics. I made my first fondant figure, and an unfinished styro cake. Less than a year later, a couple of friends asked me to make cupcake toppers for their Star Wars wedding. Since then friends and strangers have been asking us to make their custom cakes for them. I'm a freelance decorator, but I usually collaborate with Chef JB for commissioned projects.

I still haven't made a complete career change, but fondant/gumpaste decorating is certainly a nice break from my usual gigs.

A disclaimer: We do not own rights to the film and tv franchises we pay homage to. [Don't sue us, we're poor. Really.]
[2009.04.01] This is what I did on the day I learned how to make fondant. Too bad I didn't finish it. Chef JB threw it away after a year.
[2010.02.20] This is my first commissioned project. My friends Rej and Oneal wanted Mighty Muggs Star Wars-themed toppers for their wedding favors [cupcakes].
[2010.02.20] Progress photo as we went along. We worked on 50 toppers in all [most of them unique].
[2010.02.20] Cupcake designs based on Star Wars Mighty Muggs. Design Implememtation by Jovan.
[2010.02.20] There were at least 17 unique toppers and a few stormtroopers, biker scouts and shock troopers. JB, Steph and I collaborated on this project.
[2010.03.18] This was a practice project between myself and Rica. We both love Miyazaki's works and My Neighbor Totoro so we decided to make a cake.
[2011.03.18] Rica baked the red velvet cake and did the bottom tier. I worked on most of the top tier.
[2010.04.21] 25 mini-cakes as wedding favors. That's me and Chef JB in the photo.
[2010.06.09] My good friend Karen sent me an illustration and asked me to do Depp character toppers for Johnny Depp's birthday.
[2010.07.29] Rica and Sancho loved many things and they wanted to share them with their friends on their wedding day. ^_^
[2010.08.15] Joaquin wanted a Lego Star Wars birthday cake. His dad specifically asked for a Boba Fett maquette and Han Solo in carbonite. Chef JB made Star Wars Lego minifig cupcake toppers for the occasion as well.
[2010.10.27] Lianne asked me to make Potterpuffs cupcake toppers for her birthday. [I'm not sure who originally mashed the Powerpuff Girls and Harry Potter, but it's all over the internet. I'm not sure who to give credit to for the original design.]
[2010.10.27] Hermione's polyjuice potion failed. This is a one-of-a-kind topper. The rest had duplicates.
[2011.01.09] Io wanted a Pocoyo birthday cake with Pato and Ellie.
[2011.02.01] Someone asked us to do Star Wars Original Trilogy toppers. Star Wars seems to be a popular request. ;-)
[2011.02.26] This musical mini-cake was a wedding favor for a couple of music lovers.
[2011.04.29] This is for Catherine's Starry, Starry Night-themed 18th birthday.
[2011.04.29] These were given out as favors to guests.
[2011.05.14] I helped arrange Urim and Elaine's wedding and was asked to do the wedding cake decor as well.
[2011.05.14] This is me with the cake. ^_^
[2011.07.30] My good friend Mida asked me to design her daughter's birthday cake. I was told that Sofie does ballet and football, and I spelled out her name using the shoe laces and her other favorite things.

These are usually favors asked of me by friends, but we have had strangers ask us for custom work.
