John Henry Illustrations
The Steel Driving Man inspires gritty, yet beautifully childish artwork
When asked to produce a childrens' book, I remembered the train tracks I grew up next to in Newport News and immediately wanted to re-tell the tall tale of John Henry, The Steel Driving Man. While I honored the original text, the book needed captivating illustrations suitable for children. I wanted to make them colorful and approachable, but have a certain grit and dirt to them.

I found a happy medium in the inspiration of illustrators like Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and Ben Prisk (Squidbillies). This was one of my first ventures into full color illustration and I was very pleased with the results.
