In Finnish language there are over 200 hundred names for bear. This is the legacy of bears mythical origin as the forebear of human race. Following is a study of a bear hunting ritual "Karhupeijaiset" that was still a viable tradition 20th century north-eastern finland Kainuu. "Tietäjä" an elder, literally "The one who knows" sings a bear to the sprits of the forest in order to ask for the permission to hunt one. After the sprits have agreed they send a toast to bear to inform him of his oncoming death. The capture of the bear is celebrated with days of festivities. At last the spirit of the bear is raised back to the skies, in order to guarantee the continuum of the thousand year circle. Read Less
