Typenite was an event that took place in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) where design luminaries like Abbott Miller, Tal Leming and Ellen Lupton explored type at work on the printed page, the screen and the built environment through individual presentations, and celebrated the release of Abbott Miller’s new book, Design And Content, as well as MICA’s new book, Type on Screen (edited by Ellen Lupton).
I got the great opportunity to design the identity and promotional collateral for the event. The three presentations are very different but have typography as the central theme. I wanted to refrain from creating a purely typographic approach as the content of the event was about the use of typography in a graphic design practice (Abbott Miller), the details of typography on screen (Ellen Lutpon and MICA GD MFA) and the conceptual beginnings of typefaces (Tal Leming.)
I created large posters that were unique to each presentation that were still under one unified brand. For the branding I had the honour of putting Tal Leming's new type family (Soon to be released through Type Supply) to it's first official use. For body text I used the wonderful workhorse, Lava by Typotheque.
The event's primary promotion was going to be on the web through social media. I adapted the posters for the web format which had compositional challenges of it's own.
The website followed the same visual language and compositional arrangement as the social media posters. It was designed to be responsive and used the beautifully hinted webfont versions of Queue and Lava making it readable in even low resolution environments.
