Treatment / 20 Words_ 20 Works

In the Word+Image class at UCLA Design Media Arts, we created a 320-page book, of which one copy is in UCLA Hammer Museum's permanent collection.  We studied the Graphic Design: Now In Production exhibition, lecture and catalogue, and based on an article from the catalogue—written by authors such as Michael Bierut and Ellen Lupton— we each chose a word that we felt was central to our work as designers and producers, and proceeded to create a 16-page signature based on that. The end result was a book of 20 works by 20 students, called 20 Words_ 20 Works. Selected student work, including this piece, was reviewed by Hammer's curators and Ellen Lupton herself.

My word was Treatment. I locked myself up in a room for four days and only maintained contact with a cautiously selected group of people, some of who I had a good relationship with, others not so. I filmed myself at roughly every hour, and each strip indicates a time stamp for the footage, a quote from the footage, and a still frame from the footage. The result was a very personal revelation of the self as a being that fluctuates with how it was being treated, by me and by others around me. I layered translucent vellum, laser cuts, and fragmented images as a representation of how, depending on how I am treated, I show and hide different facets of myself, but there is no such thing as the complete revelation of one firm self.
