When designing patterns, I generally work out sketches first and then draw them in Adobe Illustrator and decide color and layout. For these patterns, I wanted to draw something different than what I ususally draw and focus on conversational patterns. I chose to foucs on an insect like the bumblebee, because of where I live, which is Savannah, Georgia. Savannah is known for their honey and their bees.
