1 : A partial shadow, as in an eclipse, between regions of complete shadow and complete illumination.
2 : a surrounding or adjoining region in which something exists in a lesser degree : fringe
3 : something that covers, surrounds, or obscures : shroud
Formally this involved investigating photographic techniques such as use of shadow, light and colour to influence mood and read of an image. Lighting was used to emphasise the cinematic nature of the photograph while also providing a passage for the viewer; suburbia as a grounds for passages and concealment creating the psychological anticipation that is present in many narrative photographs.
