Level 6 Negotiated Project (Degree Show): “Don’t Lose Yourself Darling”
An ultimate display of womanhood, challenging the stereotypes associated with female characteristics concerning reproductive hormones, sex and the identity crisis’s that comes with it. My self-portraits challenge the objective perceptions of women within the media, taken from notions of vulnerability & innocence or therefor lack-of. I portray a hidden narrative of the effects on a woman's psyche concerning the progression from girlhood to womanhood. Using self-portraiture, I was able to incorporate personal experiences and express them humorously through costume with the aim to evoke, both positive and negative reactions. I allow myself to be the subject in question throughout and withholding my true-identity as a result. Showcased in this mini-series of self-expressive photographs, these 5 images were produced and exhibited for my Level 6 degree show titled: "Don't Lose Yourself Darling". Even through the way I plan to install select and caption these self-portraits; I relay notions of perfectionism and symmetry through the way I mirror outcomes. Using the eye as a centerpiece to really enforce this vision of self-reflection and visual metaphor – looking in on yourself as the viewer, relating to the concepts I have personally connoted through text (captions).
