 Exercise 3: Art Direction: Photo
For this assignment we were suppose to create a storyboard based on images we found on adobe stock that resonated with our identity and how we identified. The challenge was not having control over the images and the creative directory as we had to chose images from adobe stock.
Choosing what represented my identity and creating a storyboard was hard because sometimes you overthink and don't think you're worthy of representing certain things. With this I also had various ideas but with the limitation of adobe stock. I often found creative ideas that would tie into my identity like pop culture moments and the cities that have shaped my perspective but with this, I found it hard to find the proper images I wanted to use.
These are the original I had in mind as I initially wanted my past cities to resent who I am. Based on this I found certain images that tied back to my culture as many images contained some symbol of my culture. Through this I was able to move past cities and focus more on culture and how that influences me. However I found that I wasn't telling a story rather than just showing off my culture. Until It came to me on my deep dive of adobe stock. I came across this image of a street vendor and it clicked. My family has a long history of street vendors as many of them are or were street vendors. The art of street vending
Growing up in a small business means all hands on deck. This meant that at a young age, I was always helping my parents run their business. I wanted to focus on this as many don't realize the hard ships that families go through while running a business. Since birth many of us are already integrated into the business whether we spend our afternoons in the shop with our parents or start helping them with their business. With this many children of street vendors develop this hustler mentality.
"Los caminos de la vida"
Translates to the journeys of life, this is a Mexican song that talks about the tributes of life and its hardships. They walk through various life journeys stating that sometimes life isn't what we expected. I thought this song was perfect for this story as I walk through life journeys and hardships throughout my storyboard.
Los Tricilos de la Vida walks you through a journey of a family. Triciclo translates to tricycle as many street vendors use a tricycle to get around without having walk everywhere. In the first image we see this colorful tricycle with toys and balloons but its all alone yet has so much potential. Second image embodies the sacrifice of a mother as often many small business owners or street vendors have to work while still taking care of their children. The third image shows the family later on with everyone helping out but the constant burn out on street vending as you see the exhaustion on their face. The fourth image embodied the sacrifices of life as nothing is promised and sometimes you have to work with what you have, the hustle. The fifth image embodies the journey of sacrifice as we see the street vendor trying to sell on an empty street as sometimes thats the hardship the day will bring. Lastly we just see this empty tricycle finishing up the cycle. Just closing out the journey of the tricycle.
