WOODEN TOY CAR
We were tasked with designing and buiding a wooden toy car. The construction of the car would be built entirely out of wood with the exclusion of any manufactured wood. The deisign of the car would grant full creative freedon with us only being constrained by materials and the maximum dimensions limits of: 200*120*120. The car was to be finished solely by sanding with no chemical or solvent finishes.My final design of the car would be a stylised replica of a VW Caddy Pickup.
Research
Ideation
The ideation process involved sketching out multiple ideas as weell as presenting final pages where the scale and measurements of the car would be finalised. Along with these drawings the exploration prompted for a series of orthographic and perspective views where details of the vehicle would be apparent
Development
The development process involved creating a mockup of the desired outcome. This really helped me figure out the basic shapes that make the overall shape of the car as well as being a decent exploration into the scale and fine tuning the proportions to that of a real car.
Manufacture
The first steps of the process involved measuring, cutting, and prepping the wood into simpler shapes that the car would be composed of. These shapes would then be glued to create the main chassis of the toy car.
Upon the completion of the chassis, side panels could be added and sanded down to resemble the curvature and form of a car. I then performed a test fit of the wheels of which I found out were too big to rotate efficiently under the wheel arches, this prompted me to opt for a smaller fitting wheel for the final model.
The final step of the manufacting process was left to adding window panels and a rear door as well as fitting the wheels that were a more eficient size. The end of the build process, this left the fine sanding and finishing.
Outcome
My final design resembles a simpler form of a VW MK1 Caddy Pickup. which was the source of my insspiration for the design. The design is intended for older kids maintaining decorative qualities as well as offering practicality with moving wheels.
