BYU Idaho ART 230 Class module 3
Project 1 is show casing:

Sans Serif font, Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro Bold
Serif font, Stempel Garamond LT Std Roman

For this project I was introduced to Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro Bold and to Garamond LT Std Roman fonts.

It was kind of like getting introduced to a new acquaintance.

The project consisted of getting to know the fonts by using them in an illustrator sketch.

1st I made several different sketches.
Step 2 was to digitize my 3 favorites from each font style in illustrator.
Next I picked my favorite of the Serif font and made slight changes for several different options. It was interesting to see how one small change can look so different, or lead up to a big change in look.
I then did the same for the Sans Serif font.
I found the Sans Serif font harder to work with, I think because it is a bold font. It looks good to have some big type, but when they are bold the width is drastically different than the Garamond Roman Serif style.
I kept making alterations to my final choices of the Sans Serif and Serif Font. And then...my teacher came out with a video critique of our sketches. She chose different ones than I had chosen as my favorites. She chose my second choices for each of these. I could see the reasoning in what she chose so... I changed my options and worked on the two she had suggested. It was a good lesson in how sometimes we end up picking something completely different than what we had been going toward.
Final digital sketches

The final step was to do a mock up. I printed them at my local UPS store and put them on foam board. Here they are pictured on doors in the library and on my wall.
This was a fun project, although trying to make sketches out of letters and use the principles of design was difficult. I found that I have a tendency to have too much negative space, or to not leave enough negative space. Putting the pictures on foam board was fun. All of a sudden they looked like finished art work. It will be fun to see what the future projects are, as I continue to learn about type in this Art 230 class.
