Downtown Residential High-Rise Tower

Downtown Residential High-Rise Tower (Providence, RI)

R.I.S.D., Fall 2008

By refining the core ideas of the sketch model, a high rise building in downtown Providence, RI weaves three distinct paths through the site. The physical convergence of these routes is defined by a programmatic need for residential space, as well as commercial space at the ground floor and a public community space suspended within. Units are situated for maximum southern exposure and attempt a view of the river and bay, while addressing the development of the relocated Interstate 195. The residential plan pushes a public face to the facade, shielding private spaces within. The faceting of the exterior skin is created through programming of the plan, pushing residential balconies out while retracting overhangs for double-height live/work studios.
