The contended ideal for botanical art is that its goal is “not art, but scientific accuracy”. I opted to explore botanical illustration as a fine art in the medium of pen and ink using the flora found in our local environment. I wanted to focus on the details of the plants so only employed black & white media. For this purpose I went around common areas that I visit (on my College campus) and documented various plants for my study. However, the layout style I emulated was that of a New York based illustrator by the name of Tatiana Arocha.
These works eventually branched off into an anthropomorphic study as you see in the last two pieces...

The concept for these two works is based on the relationship between human life and plant life as they sustain each other and almost seem to take on similar forms of dynamism; the purpose was to evoke a sense of unity with the human figure and plant life. The style behind the figure incorporated in these pieces was inspired by sculptural works by Robert “Toby” Grant, a Jamaican sculptor.
