Shoot 6 - Garden
Plan: In this shoot I plan to shoot outdoors with natural lighting, and to experiment with composition and framing in a similar way to Sam Contis' work.
In this shoot I did end up taking the photographs in my garden. I used only natural light, and adjusted the exposure to be under/over with the camera settings as I was shooting. I kept using a deep depth field and focused more on the compositional techniques and framing. Throughout the shoot I didn't want the images to be chaotic and not flow so I tried to keep consistent with the viewpoint. My main inspirations for this shoot was probably Sam Contis and also Colby Deal. I really like Colby Deal's use of framing to capture the landscape images he takes.
These sheets show all the images from the shoots and I decided which were working images based off whether they were blurred or out of focus or if they were too under/over exposed or if the framing was wrong.
For post-production I wanted to keep true to the genre of documentary photography I didn't want to edit them in Photoshop or any other editing software, so that it was as true to the moment as I was seeing it.
Working Images:
I think this is one of my favourite shoots I have done so far as I think it really consistantly flows and I was able to learn a lot about the composition and framing and how to make my images more interesting in those terms.
Image analysis:
I chose to analyse this image I took of the plant on the table with the rocking chair in the background. I tried to experiment more with different techniques so I used a shallow depth of field to draw the viewers eye to the main focus of the plant. I wasn't using a tripod and the plants were moving a bit because of the wind and I wanted it to be in sharp focus so I used a faster shutter speed around 1/25. In this shoot and this photo I used only natural lighting and I didn't edit the brightness of the photo at all. I think the use of natural lighting creates a really bright and cheerful effect on the photo. The viewpoint of this image is straight on and creates balance an equality in the image. Compositionally, I used the rule of thirds in this image where the primary focus is in the third grid on the right and this creates a more dynamic image to look at. The subject (being the plant) is in the foreground of the image and is the dominant focus allowing all of the viewers attention to be on it. The texture of the brick wall in the background does help to add some dimension to make sure the image wasn't too boring or flat. I wasn't really trying to communicate any particular message with this shoot, I was just trying to use this as practice to enhance my skills. However, this photo make a very bright and happy atmosphere which I do like. In my next shoot I definitely want to apply this knowledge of framing and composition to the portraits that I want to take for my final project.
