VENUS IN FAKE FURS – Performance by David Prando

 

An image comes from the work of a photographer, who chooses some elements to obtain

a certain effect, following an idea he's got in his mind. It may seem obvious, but we

normally don’t think about it when we’re staring at a picture: we just look at someone’s

creation but we don’t think about the process which preceded it. With “Venus in Fake

Furs”, David Prando wants to reveal the creative moment before the picture; the moment

when the photographer takes a slice of reality and works on it to build something new.

The concept becomes real in two different ways: firstly, taking a live photoshoot at the

“Bugarach” an artistic event in Padua, where local artists can perform their own art. Writers, musicians and of course photographers do their job and people can witness the process behind the making-of. And then, with the pictures themselves.

“Venus in fake furs” is a tribute to the 1969 movie “Venus in furs”, an experimental and

dreamlike work by Jesus Franco. Prando takes inspiration from the 60’s but he doesn’t

want to create a mere vintage copy. The atmosphere of those years is taken, changed and

recreated in new presentday

fashion. This desire of selecting a theme and playing with it

to create a new object is linked with the fake fur coats the model wears, which give a title to the entire work. Fake fur resembles real fur, but is in fact made up to attain that

appearance and becomes here the symbol of creation through the manipulation of reality.

“Fake” does not mean something like a hoax, but it is about the more positive idea of

imitation reworked, a thing that looks like something else, but is created ad hoc by the

artist.
