Nonobjective Paper Sculpture

Nonobjective Paper Sculpture, Artist Raven Shaw 2024
I wanted to create something using squares that would become a harmonious organic shape. In this case I think I created something that looks like architecture based off of the vascular system of plants. It might also remind you of a musical instrument, or of music itself because of the flowing rhythm of similar shapes.
I began by drawing parallel rivers, then divided them into different sized rectangles. by slicing an X in center of each rectangle, I ended up with various sizes of triangles that would be folded downward to make "legs" for the sculpture to stand on. Because they were different lengths, the legs forced the sculpture to settle unevenly, creating a sinuous, raised landscape. I went a step further by making the longer legs into staircases. This allowed for capturing more shadows, giving the sculpture more visual interest.
From this work I learned how to get precise folds from the type of drawing paper I was using.
