Proposal for the Sabadell Town Festival Poster

Se nos encargó la realización del cartel de la Fiesta Mayor de la ciudad de Sabadell. En el briefing, se nos proporcionó la información que debía aparecer, pero el tema era libre. Dado que el año 2024 es el año de la cultura en esta ciudad, decidí hacer alusión a esto incluyendo cuatro de los personajes más icónicos: "els bastoners", "els diables", "els músics" y "el carameler". Este último es un personaje popular que porta su barretina y bastón.

We were tasked with creating the poster for the Fiesta Mayor of the city of Sabadell. In the briefing, we were given the information that should appear, but the theme was free. Since 2024 is the year of culture in this city, I decided to allude to this by including four of the most iconic characters: "els bastoners", "els diables", "els músics", and "el carameler". The latter is a popular character who wears his beret and carries a cane.

En cuanto a la tipografía, elegí la "Didot" debido a su legibilidad y al hecho de que, al tener serifa y alto contraste, le proporciona un toque elegante que evoca la cultura. Sin embargo, si todas las letras fueran con esta tipografía, el diseño resultaría demasiado serio para una festividad. Por ello, decidí crear contraste dibujando algunas de las letras utilizando la misma técnica que con los sujetos, dando forma a una especie de nubes.

Esta combinación ofrece un contraste visual cautivador: la Didot aporta sofisticación y formalidad, estableciendo una base sólida, mientras que la tipografía hecha a mano añade una dosis de creatividad y calidez, creando así un equilibrio estético que captura la atención del espectador de inmediato. Esta amalgama de estilos tipográficos refleja perfectamente la diversidad cultural que caracteriza a la fiesta popular. La elegancia de la Didot puede simbolizar la historia y la tradición arraigadas en el pueblo, mientras que la tipografía hecha a mano, con su aspecto lúdico y orgánico que recuerda a las nubes, representa la diversidad de las personas y la creatividad que aportan al evento.

When it comes to typography, I chose "Didot" due to its readability and the fact that, being serif and high contrast, it adds an elegant touch that alludes to culture. However, if all the letters were in this typeface, the design would be too serious for a festival. That's why I decided to create contrast by drawing some of the letters using the same technique as with the subjects, shaping them into a kind of clouds.

This combination offers a captivating visual contrast: Didot brings sophistication and formality, establishing a solid foundation, while the handmade typography adds a dose of creativity and warmth, thus creating an aesthetic balance that immediately captures the viewer's attention. This amalgamation of typographic styles perfectly reflects the cultural diversity that characterizes the popular festival. The elegance of Didot can symbolize the history and tradition rooted in the town, while the handmade typography, with its playful and organic appearance reminiscent of clouds, represents the diversity of people and the creativity they bring to the event.

En cuanto a la elección de los colores, también quería reflejar la diversidad. Los personajes son de género neutro por esta misma razón, ya que la fiesta incluye a personas de todo tipo. Los bastoners debían ser principalmente de color verde y amarillo, en gran medida por el color de su vestimenta original. Los diablos son rojos por el mismo motivo y para evocar el fuego. El Carameler, al ser un personaje rural, debía tener un color que recordara a los campos de trigo característicos. Finalmente, los músicos de la Orquesta Sinfónica del Vallès son de color morado para crear contraste con los demás colores y porque es un color armónico. El fondo es beige para ser neutral y mejorar la legibilidad sin ser tan plano como el blanco.

Regarding the color selection, I also wanted to evoke diversity. The characters are agender for this same reason, as the festival comprises people of all kinds. The stick dancers were to be primarily green and yellow, mainly reflecting the colors of their original attire. The devils are red for the same reason and to evoke fire. The Candy Seller, being a rural character, needed a color reminiscent of characteristic wheat fields. Finally, the musicians from the Symphony Orchestra of Vallès are purple to create contrast with the other colors and because it's a harmonious color. The background is beige for neutrality, enhancing legibility without being as flat as white.
