Thailand's parliamentary casino committee sets up subgroups

The Thai National Assembly's extraordinary committee, tasked with investigating the country's possible legalization of casinos, has set up five subcommittees. The information was provided by the committee's spokesperson, Fada Warakhanont, as quoted by the Bangkok Post newspaper.

The appointment of so-called commissioners requires approval by National Assembly Speaker Chuan Li-fi, the newspaper reported on Friday.

The lower house of parliament voted on Dec. 2 to establish a 60-member "special committee" to review Thailand's casinos legalization issue. The committee is expected to complete the study within 90 days.

One of the five groups set up by the ad hoc committee will focus on legal issues and the collection of game taxes and revenues. The second subcommittee will discuss potential venues for attracting casino resorts in Thailand and the conditions for the opening of such complexes.

Thailand's capital Bangkok would be the best destination for casino resorts, two casino consultants told GGRAsia recently.

The other three groups set up under the interim committee will focus on investment-related matters and the potential format of Thai casino resort plans, issues related to casino business operations, and the potential negative impact of domestic casino legalization, respectively.

In an interview with the Bangkok Post, Mr Fada said the special committee will encourage widespread public participation in their work.

The legalization of casino gambling has recently been the subject of controversy in the Buddhist community. Some of Thailand's neighboring Southeast Asian countries, such as Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia, have legal gambling places.
