The Oculus
Personalised residence at Mawathagama, Sri Lanka
A holiday home for a client who craves nature and simplicity, we design the residence ‘The Oculus’ by placing emphasis on capturing panoramic views on offer at the site and prioritising economical approach through materials and building techniques.
Site was a picturesque land of one and a half acres located in Mawathagama with a scenic view of a mountain range. Throughout the design process, we wanted to maintain clarity through simple geometry by having two proportionate cubes interlocking each other in harmony. Three bedrooms, including a master suite, were arranged inside the dominant cube while the living areas are located in the secondary rectangular solid at the entry level. We utilised exposed bricks and cut cement finishes over more pristine finishes to reduce the cost. Most of the original vegetation on the land were retained through careful placement and orientation of the building.
Soothing climate of the intermediate zone coupled with ample vegetation and 360 degree views, the oculus offers its residence a perfect get away from the busy city life.
