The piece began with a storyline first. The storyline was developed after asking a number of people what they thought the raw untouched photograph suggested.
The storyline is a tale of a woman in a relationship that starts out wonderful, then takes a turn for the worst. Sometime during the abuse a moment of clarity comes to her and she realizes that her worth is more than that of a punching bag—more than that of an outlet for another's unmanaged anger—and so she flees the relationship.
