Artwork Description: The Yasaka Pagoda, commonly known as the Tower of Yasaka, is a Buddhist pagoda situated in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan. Hōkan Temple, a 6th-century temple complex, has a 5-story pagoda as its sole extant structure. The original pagoda was constructed in the 7th century, but it was damaged and rebuilt four times before reaching its present state. Despite being rebuilt several times following fires, the Yasaka Pagoda's construction and design have not changed. Its enduring design, which includes a long central wooden beam, typifies earthquake-resistant construction and serves as a model for modern professionals erecting structures in seismic areas. The pagoda, which consists of five levels that may swing independently around the central beam, absorbs seismic shocks and redirects movement to the ground. The genius of this design likely dates back to the reconstruction in 948, when repairs rectified a precarious tilt in the pagoda.
