Antology of Short Stories

I was commissioned to illustrate a series of short stories based on retellings of popular German tales.

I decided I wanted to give each story a particular style and feel, connecting the ones that were continuations of the same story with the same style, and adding some variation with shapes, color palettes and general looks for the project.

I read all the stories and worked on a storyboard, and then created each illustrated tale as part of its own world.

I've experimented with different techniques that I don't usually use, and it was really fun to do so! Hope you like it!

...................................................
Die Zwerge
On this story, I wanted to have a friendly style, full of funny details and textures, with crazy looking elements, and colorful clothing and design for the characters. It was a fun story, so I tried to keep it fun aswell!
Otto der Drache
This story was probably my favourite in terms of the experimentation I did. I enjoyed working with a limited pallette with two bold colors, and playing around with graphic lines and shapes to add dewmpth and interest on each illustration. I tried to mix textures and feels, and I'm pleased with the final result and the stylized look of the characters.
Otto was as tall as seven elefants!
Kleine Wolke
On this story I wanted to play around with a more painterly style, adding pops of color to break the pallette, and keep the texture the brushtrokes create on the canvas.
Pfannkuchenmonster Das Kennenlernen
Here I focused on a more friendly style, more close to my usual style, with colored pencil textures and saturated colors, with a more classic children's book style. I played around with flat color shapes to add more interest to the vignettes.
Dürre im Pfannekuchenland
To keep with the looks of the last story with the same characters, I used a more painterly look, with textures that mimic colored pencils to keep it playful.
Zahnfee
Here I tried a more graphic style, with some textures that remid me of old aerographiated posters, using colored shapes and hard shadows to give depth to the images, using a complemetary and limited color scheme.
Magische Milch
I do not tend to use bold lines on my illustrations, so here I tried to experiment a bit with it, playing around aswell with a bold color pallete.
Olaf der Pinguin
Here I tried a simpler look, some washes of color with lots of white and hard edge shapes that mimic a digital collage
Kleine Wolke
Here I leaned harder on the watercolor feel, to give it more depth, but keeping the hard edges to conect the looks with the previous story of the same characters.
