Photo Essay - Berang Gully

Concept Note:
In my photo essay, "Berang Gully”, I embark on a poignant journey into the heart of a community battling extreme poverty. The images within this series bear witness to the struggles and resilience of its residents, each carrying their own unique story of hardship. Through their candid expressions and the stark realities of their environment, I aim to evoke a sense of compassion and collective responsibility.          
Capturing the harsh reality of destitution, this photo essay delves into the lives of a community living in sector - 14, Panchkula, Haryana struggling without the basic human needs of food, shelter, and clothing. Discovered one evening in an impoverished gully, the images reflect the my emotional journey as they connect with residents, each carrying a unique story of helplessness. They shared their stories, their experiences, hardships and even food with me. Confronted with the stark realization that these individuals have endured their plight for 15 years, the narrative aims to shed light on the urgency for collective empathy and action. The Black and white photographs used in the essay actually depict their colourless lives. The photographs evoke a profound sense of compassion and contemplation, urging viewers to acknowledge the silent resilience of those living in the shadows of extreme poverty.
