Glorious Grids - To utilize simple shapes (squares, circles, and more) and put them in a grid to create different defined qualities of an animal (7x9), (12x14), (14x18)
Sketches
Personal Insight
I wanted my animal to be unique that people do not usually think when an animal comes in their mind. Usually people would think pet animals or barn animals, in some cases popular animals. So I chose a camel because the unique shapes I would need to use to make a camel. I used reference images to get the shape of the animal. Then I needed to think of which shapes to use to create the animal. Then I also decided on different values of the camel, such as the shadows. Simplicity was a key part of my thinking to utilize the shapes.
Low-Poly Grid
Personal Insight
I already knew which sketch I was going to use to create the low-poly quality. I was thinking about what environment I should put a camel, so I decided a desert feel with the sun to indicate the hot desert. Added some pyramids to indicate the specific place it is at. Used a variety shades of brown to show the shadows and different color of fur. The sky and ground was pretty straight forward.
Medium-Poly Grid
Personal Insight
I started changing up the shape to make it more detailed but also keep the simplicity of the animal covered in shapes. I started changing the background. Added more pyramids and changed the gradient of the sky to show that the quality is getting more defined. Sticking with the same colors of the camel and adding more shadows.
High-Poly Grid
Personal Insight
I finally put more detail on the camel but keeping it simple again. Adding more gradient of the sky the higher quality the image is. Putting more pyramids in different locations and locating the sun and scaling it to fit the composition. While adding shadows to the ground to show where the light is coming from. This is the final part of making the camel and its environment.
Final Thoughts
I had fun making all the different qualities of poly grids. It was time consuming but worth the effort creating the image in mind. I had a challenge with the color portion because I wanted it to be fun but I chose the realistic route because it was easier to identify the colors that way. I had to utilize different shapes that was given to me and create a intricate but simple animal. Overall, I think the whole idea came out great.
