Nothing COMMUNITY EDITION Phone (2a)

COMMUNITY EDITION (Phosphorescence), Phone (2a)
Nothing, UK

Fireflies use their bioluminescence to communicate with other fireflies. Large groups can sometimes sync and flash in unison. Those facts resonate with the sense of community we want to infuse in the design.

Using green-tinted phosphorescent material finishes, elements of the back of the phone emit a soft glow in the dark. This feature is purely analogue, requiring no power source, and can last for hours before gradually fading until it recharges by daylight. It is widely used in the watch industry. Like the fireflies, the glowing feature can also be functional, for example locating your phone in the dark or indicating your presence.

Inspired by the green phosphorescence, the body presents a light green finish. The colour is timeless and also refers to machinery and PCB board in a paler tone. The two green tones, Industrial Green and Ghost Green, create an intriguing colourway. We are interested in the duality of the phone appearances evolving from daylight to dark. The daylight appearance is luminous with silver details that amplify the brightness and give an engineering feel, while the impression in the dark is mysterious and contrasted. The glass is slightly tinted enhancing the translucent effect. To complement the theme, we picked neon red as a colour accent which is also similar to fireflies’ head colour.

The concept builds upon the Phone (2a)'s translucent glass effect and glowing Glyph interface while reflecting the values of expression and curiosity found in the Nothing community.
