Exploring New Sustainable Mobility Concepts

Client: Arcadis | Year: 2022

Context
In 2022, the Arcadis Innovation Studio embarked on a mission to explore the intersection of sustainability and mobility. With sustainability already at the forefront of our innovation endeavors, our team recognized the growing importance of sustainable mobility and its alignment with Arcadis' expertise. Leveraging our extensive network and prior research in sustainable mobility, we set out to pioneer innovative concepts poised to redefine the future of transportation.

Goals
Our project had a dual purpose: to delve into cutting-edge sustainable mobility concepts and to validate our newly defined innovation process. Grounded in a commitment to sustainability and innovation, our objective was to unearth groundbreaking solutions capable of addressing pressing mobility challenges while aligning with Arcadis' strategic priorities.

Methods
I led our team through a journey that integrated research and design thinking methodologies. Spearheading the research efforts, we conducted desk research and engaged in stakeholder interviews across relevant domains. Through meticulous analysis and synthesis, we unearthed valuable insights to fuel our ideation phase.

Transitioning into the design phase, I facilitated collaborative ideation sessions and creative workshops. Leveraging the diverse expertise within our cross-functional team, ranging from business analysis to creative technology, we generated and prioritized innovative concepts poised to shape the future of sustainable mobility.

Our process culminated in the presentation of these concepts to key business stakeholders at Arcadis, where we solicited feedback to refine and prioritize our ideas. This collaborative exchange ensured that our concepts were not only innovative but also closely aligned with Arcadis' expertise and strategic vision.

Outcome
The culmination of our efforts received resounding validation as our steering committee greenlighted further exploration of select converged concepts. This endorsement underscored the relevance and significance of sustainable mobility within Arcadis and beyond. Notably, we forged a partnership with the Hong Kong bureau of Arcadis to advance our exploration of sustainable mobility concepts in a city grappling with pressing transportation challenges.

Testimonial
"I worked closely with Ben at Arcadis' Global Innovation Studio. Ben is an authentic, passionate and hard-working person, with a huge amount of knowledge and skill around UX research. As a non-UX researcher myself, I learnt a lot from him around research methodologies, avoiding bias, design, facilitating workshops and interviews, and getting to the heart of human needs and desires. He is also great fun to work with, brings humor into the work setting, and places a lot of emphasis on good team dynamics. One thing that really sets Ben apart is that you can tell he genuinely cares about the cause of his work; making a positive difference to the world, doing things the 'right' way, consistently having the goals of the business in mind. Any team would be lucky to have him as a colleague."
