A book based on the screenplay of the film ‘The Tree of Life’ by Terence Malick, analyzing the issues of religion and the meaning of life through photography. By inserting real images of photojournalism and other unsanctioned yet ‘real’ imagery, I aim to challenge the text further and question the validity of Malick’s methods in conveying his ideas. Taking inspiration from Bertolt Brecht’s book ‘War Primer’, I want to present the screenplay in a pedagogic, ‘textbook-like’ manner through which to encourage the reader to analyze both the real imagery and screenshots from the film, and through understanding both my ‘realist’ approach and Malick’s religious approach, can come to a unique interpretation of their own. The ‘truth’ behind each image is hard to reach out of context, but ultimately presents to the viewer a series of messages to be decoded, as complex or as simple as the viewer wishes to interpret.
