Narrative feature:
Same:
(1) Musical, flashback, flash forward, fantasy and dream all can be set up in middle of narrative.
(2)The purpose is same that bridges time, place and action to reveal information about the character, or move the story forward.
Different:
(1)Sometimes, fantasy and dream can be set at the start of story. Musical, Flash forward and flashback can be set at the start of story or the end of story.
(2)Both flashback and foreshadowing are narrative devices that present story events out of temporal order. Flashback describes some past events related to the present; foreshadowing gives allusion (possibly implicit) to some future events.
Shots conversion:
Same :
Normally, from action, dialogue, or face expression to next scene.
Different:
(1)Musical scene transition is from real world to real world, but others is from a real world to non-real world.
(2)Except musical, other methods can use some special effect to switch shots, such as fuzzy lenses.
(3)The shots conversion of flashback and flash forward are very quick,and shots frequently switch from current scene to back or further scene, just a dialogue,a action or a expression, very fast pace. However, musical, fantasy and dream can describe a whole story scene.
Lighting conversion:
Normally, musical conversion is still current lighting, no special change, but sometimes others can use different color lighting to distinguish real and non-real scene.
Music conversion:
musical is a whole song, others just use some background sounds or present sounds.
Character's emotion:
Same:
They are all depending on the development of story. it is closely linked with the plots of story.
Different:
But musical directly express feelings with song, others express character's emotion through The indirect scene to show.
Summary:
I believe that the use of these elements can be interspersed to present, and now some musical films have some fantasy scenes, so the same method, we can insert musical scene in fantasy, flashback, flash forward and dream, depending on story needs.
