A court in Ludhiana has refused to stop the release of "Chamkila," starring Diljit Dosanjh, on Netflix.
The Netflix film "Amar Singh Chamkila" can go forward with its scheduled premiere, according to a recent court ruling in Ludhiana. Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, the film narrates the life of Amarjot Kaur, the second wife of the late Punjabi artist Amar Singh Chamkila, and was directed by Imtiaz Ali.
Patiala resident Ishdeep Singh Randhawa took legal action on April 8 by filing a petition to halt the film's release. In 2012, Randhawa's late father, Gurdev Singh, allegedly purchased the film's rights from Gurmail Kaur, Chamkila's first wife. But last year, Randhawa withdrew a comparable case.

Despite giving the filmmakers time to respond, the court did not prevent the film's release. Their legal team maintained that their client's film did not infringe on any copyright laws, and that the agreement that Randhawa had referenced had expired.
The tragic tale of Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila, which started in 1988 amidst the turbulent times in Punjab, remains unresolved. Although she gained fame as a live Punjabi musician, Chamkila, who was born and raised in Ludhiana, also took heat for her performances.
