Studio Lighting Portraits

Catherine Joubert Studio Portrait
This project required me to understand and work with light to create the finished product. This ultimately led me to the images that you see. The lighting techniques that I used for these three images are short, butterfly, broad lighting.

From the left is the Short lighting which is created through having the shortest side of the face lit up and the broader side in the shade.

The middle image is an example of butterfly lighting, that is created with light that is lit right above the subject to create the butterfly like shade underneath the nose.

The third is the broad lighting opposite to the short lighting, the broader side of the face is lit while the short side is in the shade.
The next two lighting techniques are rim lighting and wrap around lighting.

On the left the lighting setup used was rim lighting and to achieve this effect I positioned the light directly behind but off center from the subject, with a prop light in front of the subject to create the rim effect.

The second image is the wraparound lighting and this is achieved by having two light directly opposite each other with the subject in between both lights.
The Location for the projects is Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
