‘Kingdom for Everyone’ concept for a new British flag

2005 - 2014

Kingdom for Everyone” is a self-initiated project – proposal for a new national symbol/flag for Great Britain.  The concept was developed in 2005 as part of my final MA project at Central Saint Martins’ School of Art and Design in London, titled: “Cosmonationals vs. Governments and challenged loyalty: how can we design a creative future for nationality and citizenship in a world without borders?” The project itself was a risky adventure in those times when no one questioned the legacy and the integrity of the Union Jack. Against all odds, I was determined to present an innovative concept for a new symbol, one which does not follow representations through geographical and religious symbols.
Union Jack, the beautiful flag with the Cross of St. George (England), the Cross of St. Patrick (Northern Ireland) and the Cross of St. Andrews (Scotland) symbolizes the glorious and the stormy history of the United Kingdom. But it doesn’t represent Wales and is problematic if Scotland becomes independent after the forthcoming Referendum (18th of September 2014).

I proposed a symbol to serve people and values, rather than lands, religion or ethnic groups. “Kingdom for Everyone” is a Crown of united and network-empowered citizens.
In 2005 - 2006 my concept was presented at exhibitions in London, Berlin and Skopje and was featured in “Mind field” - a TV show on BBC3.

In 2014 I was inspired to sit again on the drawing board, envisioning how the flag would look like without Scotland being part of the United Kingdom. The result are 3 variations of “Kingdom for Everyone” in red, white and green color. Still, the colors reference the citizens of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but they might even vary as the main focus is the symbol – an open Crown made of people. The design is flexible enough for usage in 1:1 or 1:2 ratios.
