Birth of the Mormegil

Birth of the Mormegil
The Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin and the Gurthang, waiting for his master - Turin in the halls of Nargothrond.
The illustration of the Silmarillion and Narn i Hîn Húrin (The Tale of the Children of Húrin) by J.R.R.Tolkien.
Mormegil - 'The Black Sword', name given to Túrin as captain of the host of Nargothrond.
The inscriptions on the helmet is in Sindarin: Lacho calad! Drego morn! (Shine the Light! Run the night!) and Tôl acharn! (Vengeance is Coming!). The inscriptions on the sword is also in Sindarin, it is his name - Gurthang (Iron of Death).

Túrin became a captain and led the Elves of Nargothrond into open warfare. His increasing fame with Gurthang gave Túrin a new name: Mormegil "The Black Sword" of Nargothrond.
The Dragon-helm was forged some time after the Dagor Aglareb (F.A. 60) by the dwarf-smith of Nogrod, Telchar, for his lord Azaghâl, who then gave it as a gift to Maedhros. He in turn passed it on to his cousin Fingon. In 416, Fingolfin, the High King of the Noldor, created the fiefdom of Dor-lómin and made Hador the first Lord of Dor-lómin. To celebrate the event, Fingon presented Hador with the helm, which would then become a heirloom of his House.
The Dragon-helm was crafted for a Dwarf, by a Dwarf, and was too large and heavy for an Elf. Even Men found the Helm was too massive, and only Hador and some of his descendants had the strength to wear it. The Helm of Hador was a grey steel helm with a visor that was made in the fashion of Dwarves so as to shield the eyes of the wearer. The helm was embossed and embellished with gold and graven runes of victory, and bore defiantly upon its crest a gilded image of Glaurung. It was said that a power lay upon the runes that protected its wearer from wounds and struck fear into the hearts of enemies, turning back swords and darts.
Gurthang was the sword of Túrin Turambar, reforged from Anglachel the sword wielded by Beleg Cúthalion when Túrin slew him in a tragic turn of events.
It was black and shone with a pale fire. With it Túrin performed great deeds but also senseless acts, and it broke when Túrin killed himself upon the sword.
"Turambar swept Gurthang from its sheath and stabbed with it up above his head, and it seemed to those that looked on that a flame leapt from Turambar's hand many feet into the air. Then they gave a great cry: 'The Black Thorn of Brethil!"
"Hail Gurthang! No lord or loyalty dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee. From no blood wilt thou shrink. Wilt thou therefore take Túrin Turambar, wilt thou slay me swiftly?' And from the blade rang a cold voice in answer: 'Yea, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly."
