A series of illustrations decpicting the story of Lycoan, King of Arcadia
Hearing of the evil deeds of men, Zeus king of the immortal gods, disguises himself as a traveler walks the world searching for good respectable people.
Night is falling as he comes across the palace of the king of Arcadia.
Inside the king and his court dines. The king notices Zeus and offers him scraps. Zeus (disguised) asks for respects due him as a traveler but after the King refuses, he announces himself as Ruler of the Gods.
Lycoan, disbelieving, allows Zeus a spot at his table, but orders his people to test their guest by delivering him a plate of human flesh.
Enraged, Zeus destoys the hall and kills everyone in it, save Lycoan.
Lycoan lives and runs from the hall- but cannot escape without punishment.
Zeus lets Lycoan live but turns him into a blood thirsty wolf so his exterior appearance can reflect his savage character more truthfully.
