Suddenly, in the middle of the weekend morning, TV ratings hit peaks that would make even primetime jealous. A boy drops his coffee mug and runs to grab the remote because the Formula 1 race is about to start.
This was the magic of Sunday mornings during the so-called Age of Champions, the golden era of motor racing in Brazil that introduced the great legends of the tracks.
It started with Emerson Fittipaldi, followed by Nelson Piquet and the famous Ayrton Senna. “Brazilian drivers are so good because they train early on in this chaotic traffic,” was the joke used to explain the phenomenon of Brazilian victories.
